You can cancel Netflix because a free version just hit the UK (2024)

A new streaming service has been launched in the UK to rival the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and BBC iPlayer, with more than 20,000 films and TV episodes already available – for free.

Tubi, which has an ad-supported model, is owned by Robert Murdoch’s Fox Corporation in the US, but last week made its cinematic and televisual wares available to watch over here.

British viewers now have access to Tubi’s website, Tubitv.com, which is offering thousands of titles.

It comes after Netflix customers were left furious after being told about the end of the Basic plan, which allows viewers to watch Netflix without adverts for £6.99 a month.

Later this month it will be coming to an end, with subscribers now having to pay either £2 less to have adverts interrupt their viewing, or increase their monthly subscription by £4 to the Standard package to avoid ads.

By comparison to Tubi’s 20,000 titles, Netflix offers 5,000 films and 2,500 TV series.

It’s likely many Netflix customers’ attentions will be captured by the arrival of Tubi and the fact it’s completely free.

Some of the TV titles available to stream on Tubi including Great British Menu, The Secret History Of The British Garden, Paul Hollywood’s Pies & PudsandMary Berry’s Foolproof Cooking.

Meanwhile it also features movies including the full Twilight saga, Happy Gilmore, 2018’s version of Robin Hood with Taron Egerton and Jamie Foxx and Kill Bill: Vol 1 and 2.

What’s more, it might be one of the easiest ways to watch a film or TV show online as you’re not even required to sign up for an account to see something on Tubi.

You can simply scroll through the titles, divided into genres such as comedy, family movies, sci-fi and fantasy, horror and romance, and click play on anything that catches your eye.

The new streaming service pulls content from several different major studios, including Disney, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures Entertainment and NBCUniversal.

UK viewers also have access to Tubi’s own originals, which currently include shark attack film Blind Waters, reality show House of Heat and several Vice News documentaries.

Other notable titles available on Tubi are popular Gerard Butler thriller Olympus Has Fallen, serial killer horror Candyman, Slow West starring Michael Fassbender and another Quentin Tarantino classic: Jackie Brown.

You can also watch Sofia Coppola’s 2017 version of The Beguiled with Nicole Kidman, or Christian Bale and Margot Robbie in the star-studded cast of period comedy thriller Amsterdam from 2022.

And rom-com fans fear not, for a little digging has uncovered gems including Wimbledon, Love & Other Drugs and (in the so bad it’s good category) Leap Year! There are campy cult favourites and stone cold classics too in the form of Cruel Intentions and seminal screwball comedy My Man Godfrey.

10 of the best films available to watch now on Tubi

In no particular order, here are 10 of the movies we think are worth your time (and zero pennies) watching on Tubi:

  1. Kill Bill Vol. 1 and 2
  2. Cruel Intentions
  3. Candyman
  4. Slow West
  5. Moonrise Kingdom
  6. Happy Gilmore
  7. Olympus Has Fallen
  8. Wimbledon
  9. The Beguiled (2017)
  10. Twilight (and its sequels, should you so wish)

Yu-Gi-Oh! features in its anime section, while there’s also Bollywood and Nollywood movies and sections for Black Cinema and K-Drama.

According to Fox’s own claims on behalf of Tubi, the platform has 80,000,000 active users and ties for total viewing time in the US with Disney Plus.
