Who funds ocean exploration? ›

Through its annual competitive grant opportunity, NOAA Ocean Exploration funds projects designed to enhance ocean exploration and scientific knowledge of unexplored or poorly known areas of the ocean.

Systematic ocean exploration in the United States began in 1807 when Thomas Jefferson authorized the Survey of the Coast, NOAA's earliest predecessor. Since then, NOAA and its ancestors have played a critical role in the evolution of ocean exploration in the United States and the world.

But we don't... We have only explored five percent of our world ocean. That means that 95 percent of our ocean is unknown. Help protect our ocean by sharing what you've learned.

Ocean, Coastal and Great Lakes Research is funded at $251.5M, which is an increase of $14.5M above FY 2022 enacted. Innovative Research and Technology is funded at $19.2M, which is an increase of $1.2M above FY 2022 enacted. OAR received $100M in PAC funding, an increase of $51.5M above FY 2022 enacted.
