On the off chance you’re not familiar with the number one rule of skincare, repeat after me: I promise to wear sunscreen every single day. Sunscreen isn’t one of those steps you can skip because so many skincare woes can be traced back to a lack of sun protection, from dullness to dark spots to sunburns. Whether you prefer drugstore sunscreens or natural formulas, traditional SPFs work wonders for those who like to keep it simple but also come with a host of downsides such as chalky white casts and pore-clogging ingredients. However, if you want to up your sunscreen game, look no further than tinted sunscreens.
“Tinted sunscreen is a versatile product that combines sun protection and light coverage, making it an excellent choice for those seeking to streamline their beauty routine,” Dr. Dusan Sajic, board-certified dermatologist and founder of Sajic Skin, tells ELLE.com. “Opting for a tinted sunscreen that contains iron oxide as the pigment agent can offer several benefits, such as a more natural-looking color and enhanced protection against visible light, which can exacerbate skin pigmentation concerns such as melasma, and minimize the signs of aging.”
Top picks for tinted sunscreens in 2024
Also, if you struggle to find an SPF that works with your skin tone, a tinted SPF can replace the creams that leave a gray or white residue. “They are great for all skin types, [from] light-skinned people who want a base tint before makeup application, or dark-skinned patients who want a sunscreen that won’t give them a white cast,” says Arizona-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Karan Lal. And unlike a foundation or concealer, you don’t have to worry about buying the wrong shade. Many tinted sunscreens are so lightweight and blendable that all you’ll notice is a glowing, flawless complexion.
Whether you have sensitive, dry, or oily skin, or are in desperate need of a non-ashy sunscreen, we tried some of the best-tinted sunscreens, consulted expert dermatologists, and read consumer reviews to bring you the 16 absolute top picks.

Pros
- Evens skin tone
Cons
- Thick consistency
This dermatologist-founded brand focuses on the real issue under the surface instead of simply treating it at the surface level. The tinted sunscreen has two shades—fair and deep—that offer great coverage for those light makeup days and high sun protection with SPF 50.
“I was shocked when I saw how much coverage this tinted sunscreen provided and immediately added it to my vacation beauty bag. The texture is thicker than most sunscreens I’ve tried, so this shouldn’t take the place of your daily sunscreen, but it is a good top-up if you want a filter-like finish.” — NP

Pros
- No white cast
Cons
- Can transfer
Not only is this mineral SPF water-resistant for up to 80 minutes, but it also only uses non-nano zinc oxide. While zinc oxide is already safer for your skin and the environment, non-nano zinc oxide ensures that the particles of zinc do not disrupt coral reefs, since their larger size prevents absorption.
Target star rating: 4.3/5 stars
A Target reviewer said: “I have the regular sunscreens from this line, but got this one for my GF because she wanted it for the face and says some of the others can be white on her face. I didn’t want to use it because I thought it would be like makeup but it blends totally clear for me. It’s mostly for her but I will use it if I forget mine since it doesn’t show at all. Not greasy either, kind of nothing feeling.”

Best For Vacation
La Roche-Posay Anthelios Tinted Mineral Light Fluid Sunscreen SPF 50
Now 16% Off
Pros
- Weightless feel
Cons
- Runny consistency
People with sensitive skin know the struggle of finding an SPF that doesn’t cause breakouts. This staple in French pharmacies has perfected its non-comedogenic formula. It’s oil-free, dermatologist-tested, and allergy-tested. Plus, for anyone who prefers a classic SPF, the sunscreen also comes in a non-tinted version.
Amazon star rating: 4.5/5 stars
An Amazon reviewer said: “This is the best tinted sunscreen I have ever tried. It comes out of the bottle in a dark tan, but it somehow manages to blend into many skin tones (I’m very pale and white). It makes me look as I have no visible makeup or sunscreen on, but it evens out my skin tone so perfectly that it’s no-makeup quality acts like the best makeup. I will sometimes throw a little bronzer on top of Anthelios Tinted Sunscreen for contouring, but that isn’t wholly necessary because another nice thing about the finish is that its doesn’t make you look unnaturally blank, with your face in a single solid color, as foundation alone usually does. Non make-up-wearing men may like this because it is so natural-looking. Its also better than any of the CC+ products I’ve tried. I tend to wear a moisturizer underneath, but my skin is dry so that’s your call.”

Best For A Glowy Finish
SkinCeuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense Sunscreem SPF 50
A universally flattering sunscreen might sound too good to be true, but in this case, it’s accurate. Not only does the fluid protect the skin against sunbeams, but it also contains translucent color spheres that flatter all skin tones. Instead of a white cast, this product leaves the skin looking dewy and glowing.
Dermstore star rating: 4.64/5 stars
A Dermstore reviewer said: “This is the best ever sunscreen! No white cast. Mineral sunscreen so protects against melasma issues which is essential for me. Lays under makeup well. Feels a little oily on fingers when sliding it in but never looks greasy or feels like that on the face once it is on. Can’t be without this one! I have tried so many.”

What should you look for in tinted sunscreen?
“To ensure adequate protection from the sun, pollution, oxidizing agents, and even visible light, it’s crucial to select a tinted sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA and UVB rays (with a minimum SPF of 30),” Dr. Sajic says. In addition to sun protection, look for formulas that are “fortified with antioxidants to combat environmental damage and iron oxide for protection from blue and visible light,” he explains.

What skin types should stay away from tinted sunscreen?
Every skin can benefit from good sunscreen. However, Dr. Sajic advises taking a closer look at the formulas if you have sensitive skin. “Those with extremely sensitive skin or skin conditions such as rosacea or acne may want to avoid certain types of tinted sunscreens, as the added pigments may cause irritation, clog pores, cause breakouts, and/or worsen existing inflammation,” he explains. The most important ingredient to look for is iron oxide, “as the tint ingredient as it provides more even coverage and is less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions compared to other types of pigments,” Dr. Sajic adds.
20
Is tinted sunscreen foundation?
“Tinted sunscreen can be used as a foundation, but it's important to keep in mind that it provides lighter coverage than traditional foundation, so it may not be suitable for those who need more coverage or have specific skin concerns,” Dr. Sajic says.
